October is the Canaries' autumn sweet spot — and the gateway to the winter-sun season. The sea is still beautifully warm from the long summer, the days stay mellow and sunny, and the peak-season crowds have well and truly thinned. As northern Europe slides into autumn, the islands quietly become its warm-weather bolthole again. It's a wonderfully balanced month: hot enough for the beach, gentle enough for touring, and better value than the summer.

The weather: warm, mellow and settled
October keeps much of summer's warmth while shedding its intensity. South-coast days are comfortably hot and sunny, the trade winds ease, and the fierce midday glare softens into something more forgiving. The greener north can catch the season's first proper showers as autumn approaches, but they're usually brief, and the south stays dependably dry. It's an excellent month for being outdoors all day — beach in the afternoon, exploring in the cooler morning. The mountains are pleasant now too, though still cool at the summits.
The sea & swimming
The Atlantic holds onto its late-summer warmth right through October, making it one of the best swimming months of the year — nearly as warm as September and far warmer than spring. Snorkelling and watersports are excellent in the clear, mild water. Enjoy long swims at Puerto Rico, Playa de las Vistas or Corralejo, all lovely this time of year.

What's on
October is quieter on the fiesta front, which suits its relaxed mood, but there's still colour to find. Around 12 October, Spain's national day (the Fiesta Nacional) brings a public holiday and local events, and towns such as Puerto de la Cruz and various villages hold their autumn romerías — folk pilgrimages with ox-carts, traditional dress and island food. Crowds & prices
With the summer holidays over, October is calmer and keener on price than the June–August peak, while still enjoying warm, sunny weather. It's a comfortable middle ground — not the rock-bottom prices of May, but far better value than midsummer, with beaches and restaurants that have room to breathe. Demand does begin to firm up towards the end of the month as the winter-sun season gets going.
Best islands & things to do
October's balance of warm sea and manageable heat makes it a great all-rounder. Beach and watersport lovers do well on Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and the south of Gran Canaria, while the softer temperatures make hiking a pleasure again — explore Roque Nublo, Anaga or the Caldera de Taburiente. The green islands of La Palma and La Gomera are lovely for a slower, nature-led trip, and it's still fine whale-watching weather.
Who October suits
October suits warm-sea swimmers who missed September, walkers and touring travellers who want comfortable temperatures, and couples and older visitors after a relaxed, good-value break in reliable warmth. There's little it does poorly, though party-seekers will find the resorts quieter than in summer.
