April might just be the Canaries' best-kept secret. The days are warm and settled, the interior is at its greenest and most flower-filled, the sea is slowly warming, and — outside Easter week — prices and crowds are wonderfully gentle. It's a spring sweet spot: warm enough for the beach, cool enough for the mountains, and quiet enough to feel like you've got the islands to yourself.

The weather: warm, calm and green
April brings some of the most agreeable weather of the year. South-coast highs climb into the low-to-mid twenties, the light is long and golden, and the north's grey mornings grow rarer as the dry season takes hold. The countryside is spectacular — wildflowers still carpet the hills, and the laurel forests of the north are lush and fragrant. It's warm enough to enjoy the beach and mild enough that hiking and touring feel effortless. As ever, the summits stay cool, so pack layers for any trip up towards Teide or Roque de los Muchachos.
The sea & swimming
The Atlantic is slowly waking up. April water is milder than the late-winter low and comfortable for a proper swim, especially in sheltered south-facing bays that catch the sun — Puerto Rico, Playa del Duque and Fuerteventura's turquoise coves among them. It's still cooler than the warm autumn seas, but it no longer takes courage to get in.
What's on: Semana Santa
April's cultural centrepiece is usually Semana Santa (Holy Week), the run-up to Easter, when towns across the islands hold solemn, candlelit processions. The historic streets of La Laguna on Tenerife, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de la Palma make the most atmospheric settings, with hooded penitents, floats and hushed, reverent crowds. Easter dates move each year and can fall in late March or April. Whenever Semana Santa lands, it's the one busy, pricier week in an otherwise quiet spring — Spanish families travel in force. Book early if your trip overlaps.

Set the Easter week aside and April is one of the best-value, least-crowded months to visit. The winter-sun long-stayers have mostly gone home, the summer rush hasn't begun, and you'll find calmer beaches, easier restaurant tables and softer prices. April is made for exploring. The green, wildflower-strewn trails are at their peak — walk Garajonay on La Gomera, the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma, or the ridges around Roque Nublo. The quieter, greener islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are gorgeous now, perfect for a slower, nature-led trip.
