The weather: hot, dry and long-lit
June brings hot, reliably sunny days on the south coasts, tempered by the trade winds that stop the heat feeling oppressive. The north can still see the odd grey morning — Gran Canaria's summer panza de burro cloud sometimes settles over Las Palmas — but it usually burns off, and the south basks regardless. The real joy of June is the light: this is around the longest day of the year, so evenings run late and warm, ideal for lingering dinners and beach strolls. The higher ground stays cooler and clearer, superb for stargazing on La Palma or Teide.
The sea & swimming
The Atlantic is comfortably warm now and lovely for swimming, snorkelling and every kind of watersport. The trade winds also make June a strong month for surfing and windsurfing, especially off Sotavento on Fuerteventura and the north of Lanzarote. Family-friendly bays like Amadores, Las Teresitas and Playa Blanca are at their best.
What's on: San Juan bonfires
The month's highlight is the Noche de San Juan on the night of 23 June, one of the most magical dates in the Canarian calendar. Marking the summer solstice, islanders gather on the beaches to light bonfires, leap the flames for luck, and — at midnight — wade into the sea to wash away the old and welcome the new. The beaches of Las Palmas, Puerto de la Cruz and countless smaller towns fill with music, food and firelight late into the night. It's free, communal and utterly memorable — arrive early to find a spot on the sand.
San Juan is a proper local celebration, not a tourist event, which is exactly what makes it special. Bring something to sit on, wrap up for the small hours, and join in — everyone's welcome around the fires.

The first half still feels like late spring — relatively quiet and good value — while the second half ramps up as European schools break and the summer season begins in earnest.
