Vilaflor is one of the highest villages in Spain — a peaceful mountain settlement perched around 1,400 metres up on the southern slopes of Mount Teide, wrapped in fragrant Canary pine forest and famous for its wine and its spring water. Up here the air is clean and cool, the light is sharp, and the great volcano looms just up the road. It's a serene, scenic world away from the beaches far below, and the natural gateway to Tenerife's soaring volcanic heart.
Set on the road that climbs from the sunny south towards the national park, Vilaflor makes a wonderful pause — or an overnight base — for anyone heading up to Mount Teide. It offers pine-scented walks, terraced vineyards, bottled-at-source spring water and a genuine highland calm, all a short drive from the resorts of Tenerife.
What it's like
Vilaflor sits high on the southern flank of Teide, where the dry lower slopes give way to a belt of magnificent Canary pine forest. The village is small and traditional — whitewashed houses, a fine old church, cobbled corners and terraces of vines climbing the hillsides — and everything is framed by the mountain rising above and the coast shimmering far below. The elevation makes it noticeably cooler and fresher than the beaches, a blessing in high summer.
This is a quiet, local, working village rather than a resort. Life revolves around farming, wine and the trickle of walkers and drivers passing through on their way to the summit. The pace is slow, the crowds are few, and the whole place feels wonderfully removed from the holiday bustle of the coast.
What to see and do
The great draw is the landscape. Vilaflor is ringed by the pine forests of the Corona Forestal, laced with marked walking trails that climb through the trees towards the eerie moonscapes of the Teide caldera. One classic route leads up to the Paisaje Lunar (Lunar Landscape), a cluster of pale, wind-sculpted rock pinnacles. At around 1,400 metres, Vilaflor is much cooler than the coast and the weather can change quickly. Bring warm layers and proper footwear even on a hot beach day, and carry water on any walk — the sun is strong at altitude.

Eating in Vilaflor is a hearty, highland affair: village restaurants serving warming stews and potaje (vegetable soup), grilled meats, local cheese and papas arrugadas with mojo, ideally paired with the local wine. Getting there and around
Vilaflor sits on the main road climbing from the southern resorts up towards Teide National Park, so it's an easy and scenic drive — a hire car is much the best way to reach it and to continue up to the summit road. See our guides to getting around and car hire. From the south-coast resorts allow around 45 minutes to an hour of winding but rewarding driving. Buses (guaguas) do serve the village but run infrequently, so a car gives you the freedom to time your Teide trip well.

Vilaflor's headline neighbour is Mount Teide itself, whose vast caldera and cable car lie a short drive up the mountain — many visitors pause in the village on the way to or from the peak.
