The Canary Islands are the tops of enormous volcanoes, built up from the deep Atlantic floor over millions of years. They didn't rise all at once, and they aren't all the same age: the eastern islands are ancient, worn low and gentle, while the western ones are young, steep and still growing. Understanding how they were made explains almost everything you see on holiday — the black beaches, the lava badlands, the pine-clad peaks and, every so often, a brand-new eruption. This is a living archipelago, and its story is written in the rock beneath your feet.
Born from a volcanic hotspot
The Canaries sit on the African tectonic plate, a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Morocco and Western Sahara. Beneath them lies what geologists call a hotspot — a persistent plume of hot material rising from deep inside the Earth. As magma pushes up through the ocean crust, it piles lava higher and higher until a volcano eventually breaks the surface as an island. The African plate drifts very slowly eastwards over this fixed hot region, so over millions of years a chain of islands has been built one after another, like a conveyor belt passing over a flame.
That process is why the archipelago forms a rough line, and why age increases as you travel east. It's a similar idea to the Hawaiian islands, though the Canaries sit on a much slower-moving plate and their history is more tangled — some islands grew, partly collapsed into the sea, and were rebuilt by later eruptions.

Why the eastern islands are old and flat
The two easternmost islands, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, are the veterans of the group. Fuerteventura's oldest rocks are around twenty million years old, making it the senior island of the archipelago. After so long, wind, waves and the rare rains have had time to grind the volcanoes down into broad, low, rolling country — which is exactly why these islands feel so different: sweeping sandy plains, gentle hills and huge open horizons rather than soaring green peaks.
Lanzarote looks starker because of a much more recent chapter: the great eruptions of the 1730s, which buried a quarter of the island under fresh lava and created the Mountains of Fire you can still explore in Timanfaya National Park. So even an "old" island can wear young volcanic scars. The overall shape, though, is that of a landscape worn down over aeons.
Read the islands like a timeline. As a rough rule of thumb, travel from east to west and you travel from oldest to youngest. The flatter, drier, sandier islands are the elders; the tall, steep, forested ones are the youngsters still being sculpted.
Why the western islands are young and steep
Head west and the volcanoes get dramatically taller and more rugged, because there has been far less time to erode them. Tenerife is crowned by Mount Teide, at 3,715 metres the highest peak in all of Spain and one of the largest volcanoes on Earth measured from its ocean-floor base. La Palma and El Hierro are the babies of the family — El Hierro's rocks are little more than a million years old — and both are essentially steep young cones rising almost straight out of deep water, ringed by cliffs and cut by plunging ravines. There's barely a flat beach between them, but the scenery is spectacular.
These young islands also carry the scars of gigantic landslides. La Palma's vast Caldera de Taburiente and El Hierro's great El Golfo bay are, in part, the amphitheatres left where whole flanks of the island once collapsed into the Atlantic — a reminder that building an island is a violent, unfinished business.
Volcanism today: the islands are still growing
These are not extinct museum pieces. The Canaries remain one of Europe's most volcanically active places, and two recent eruptions prove the point.
In 2021, the Cumbre Vieja ridge on La Palma split open and erupted for almost three months. The new volcano — now known as Tajogaite — poured lava across the island's south-west, destroying homes and banana farms and adding fresh land to the coast before falling quiet. La Palma has since fully reopened to visitors, and walking near the cooled flows, still faintly warm and smelling of sulphur, is a genuinely moving experience. A decade earlier, in 2011, El Hierro produced a submarine eruption just off the fishing village of La Restinga, staining the sea green and milky and bubbling gas to the surface — Spain's only eruption watched live from the shore in modern times.
Eruptions are rare, monitored and manageable. Volcanic activity in the Canaries is closely watched by scientists, and serious events come with warning and well-organised responses. There is no reason to worry about visiting — millions holiday here safely every year — but if you're near a recently active area, always follow official signs and keep off closed ground, which can be unstable or dangerously hot.
Where to see the geology for yourself
You don't need to be a geologist to appreciate it — the evidence is everywhere, and some of it makes for the islands' best days out.

- El Hierro's coast — lava tongues, natural rock pools and the dark drama of the world's edge on the archipelago's youngest island.
Black-sand beaches, natural sea pools carved into lava, wine grown in volcanic ash and whole islands shaped like tilted cones — once you know how the Canaries were formed, you start to see that story on every drive and every coastline. It's a place where the Earth is still, unmistakably, at work.
