How to get there
Playa del Cura sits directly on the GC-500 coastal road that threads the resorts west of Maspalomas, roughly midway between Puerto Rico and Taurito. It's an easy drive or a short hop by the frequent local buses that run along this stretch, and there's some parking near the front, though spaces are limited in high season. Many visitors simply walk or catch a bus over from neighbouring resorts. The little resort built up around the beach is small and self-contained, so once you arrive everything — sand, shops and a handful of bars — is within a few minutes' stroll.
Because the beach is small and hemmed in by apartment blocks, the sand falls into shade earlier than the big open bays. Arrive in the morning or around midday for the most sun on the sand.
What it's like
This is a small, curving cove of coarse dark sand mixed with shingle, framed by a low seafront and backed by tiers of white and pastel apartment blocks climbing the hillside. A short promenade runs along the front with a scattering of bars, cafés and shops aimed at the residential holiday crowd rather than day-trippers. The overall feel is calm, local and unpretentious — a place where regulars return year after year for the same easy routine of sun, sea and a coffee on the front. It never feels hectic, even in peak weeks.
Swimming and safety
The bay is well sheltered and the water is usually calm and clear, which makes swimming here relaxed and family-friendly. The beach shelves gently, so it's comfortable for a paddle or an easy dip, and the enclosed shape keeps the swell down on most days. As with any Canary beach, respect any flag warnings, keep an eye on children in the water, and take care if a swell picks up. On a typical sunny day, though, this is one of the gentler swims on the coast.
The mix of dark sand and shingle can get very hot underfoot in the midday sun and is harder on bare feet than fine golden sand. Beach shoes or flip-flops make the walk to the water much more comfortable.

For its size, Playa del Cura is nicely equipped. In season you'll usually find sunbeds and parasols for hire, showers and toilets, and a lifeguard presence during busy periods. The seafront bars and cafés are handy for a drink, an ice cream or a simple lunch, and there are small supermarkets and shops in the surrounding blocks for anything you've forgotten. It's a serviced little beach without the sprawl of the bigger resorts — enough to keep you comfortable for the whole day, but nothing overwhelming.

This beach suits families with young children, older visitors and anyone who prefers a calm, small-scale spot over a big, buzzy resort beach. It's ideal if you're staying in one of the apartments nearby, or if you want a quieter alternative within easy reach of Puerto Rico's shops and boat trips. It's less suited to those chasing lively beach bars, watersports and a wide sweep of golden sand — for that, the neighbouring bays offer more. But for a peaceful, uncomplicated day by the sea, it's spot on.
